As part of our social commitment of divulgating light science and technology by means of outreach activities, we have developed the current year project which has been called Fascinating science. This project will enable us going on increasing our relationships with local Primary and Secondary Schools and High Schools in our city.
The main idea of this project has been to develop an experiment database related to light which will be proposed to some educational centers of the city for being developed by the students as research work in the Science Fair which takes places every August. The development of those projects will be supported and assisted by us via e-mail and the Science Fair day we will be visiting – with our own optics and photonics experiments, the enrolled educational centers. The project is divided in four stage:
Stage-Bibliography: In this stage several experiments – including light as central element, were searched on internet. Particularly, the website www.opticsforkids.org developed by OSA was a suitable source. The experiments were translated to Spanish and grouped in three categories:
Category A (Students over 5 years)
Category B (Students over 10 years)
Category C (Students over 15 years)
Stage-Relationships: After establishing the experiments database, a number of educational centers will be contacted in order to state the centers interested in participating with us in this project (If you are interested, do not hesitate in contacting us at ceomedellin@unalmed.edu.co)
Stage-Assistance: Universidad Nacional Students members of our chapter will be supporting and assisting via email (ceomedellin@unalmed.edu.co) the involved educational centers and students. In this way, we will be fomenting the use of this important communication tool.
Stage-Visit: Finally, the Science Fair day we will be visiting – with our own optics and photonics experiments, the associated schools to this project.
Stage-Divulgation: Results of this project will be divulgated in national (Universidad Nacional media) and international (Focal Point magazine - USA) communication medias
Concretely, the benefits that the educational centers cooperating in this project will received are summarized in the following list:
- Approach to the light science which is pretty used by amazingly unknown
- Cooperation with the Universidad Nacional because its students will be available for solving possible doubts.
- Widely use of modern communication tools like e-mail
- National recognition in our Chapter webpage www.unalmed.edu.co/~ceomedellin and probably by Unimedios which is the agency in charge of newspapers, television and radio from our University.
- International recognition by the Societies OSA (Optical Society of America) and SPIE (Society of Photo-Optical instrumentation engineers) which sponsor our activities.
